World-famous opera singer Maria Callas
Narrative
Maria Callas, one of the world’s greatest opera singers, spent the last days of her life in Paris in the 1970s, confronting her identity and life. Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas’ longtime partner, later married former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
I’m in the mood for praise
Kennedy previously appeared in Pablo Larrain’s 2016 biopic Jackie, which was the title role and starred Natalie Portman as the titular character.. Maria Callas: Book me a table at a restaurant where the waiters know who I am.
(2024) The film is pretty bad
Close-up Says: Why Do We Need the Venice Film Festival? Jolie imitates Callas’s voice perfectly, but sometimes goes out of character.
Maria was portrayed as cold and mean and even mentally unstable
There is a lot of very questionable information presented as fact. The entire movie focuses on the last week of her life and we only get glimpses of her past (mostly past performances) which tell us nothing about her life.
It’s streaming on Netflix this month
Maria Callas was so much more than what was shown in the movie, and honestly I don’t think she would have liked this movie. It shows that the people who made this movie know nothing about her or opera, otherwise they wouldn’t have made such stupid scenes.
