Google has introduced a new feature for its Gemini Advanced AI chatbot, allowing it to remember and reference past conversations. While this is a big upgrade in the AI space, privacy-conscious users might have an issue with this. The good thing is that Google will give an option to disable this feature. The company has announced the update in its latest Google blog post, promising that this will make future interactions smoother and more contextually relevant. The tech giant says that the new capability will improve the functionality of Gemini by enabling it to recall and build on previous chats.
Until now, users had to start each conversation afresh with Gemini, as it could not refer to prior discussions. However, with this latest development, users can now ask Gemini to summarise past chats or build on earlier conversations without the need to manually search through previous threads. For instance, if you have discussed the solar system, you can simply ask Gemini to summarise that previous conversation, and it will recall the relevant details from your past chats.
This new feature places Gemini Advanced ahead of its competitor, OpenAI’s ChatGPT. While ChatGPT can remember general details over time, it cannot directly recall or summarise specific past conversations on demand. Gemini’s ability to use past interactions as a source allows it to provide more tailored responses, giving it a competitive edge in the evolving AI landscape.
According to Google, users will have control over their stored chat history, with options to review, delete, or decide how long to retain past conversations. If needed, users can also completely disable this feature by accessing the Gemini Apps Activity settings through Google’s “My Activity” dashboard. Moreover, Gemini will indicate when it is using past chats to generate responses or related content.
The new memory feature is being rolled out in English for Gemini Advanced subscribers on the Google One AI Premium Plan. It is available on both the Gemini web and mobile apps. Google has also announced plans to expand this feature to other languages and make it available to its Google Workspace Business and Enterprise customers in the coming weeks.
In related news, Google just recently released its reasoning AI model for its users, which is similar to DeepSeek. The Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking model is trained to break down prompts into a series of steps to strengthen its reasoning capabilities and deliver better responses. It shows the thought process, so users can see why it responded in a certain way, what its assumptions were, and trace the model’s line of reasoning.
