Office 2021 Support Ends 13 October: What Firms Must Do
Affix Center · · 5 min read

In short: Microsoft will end support for Office 2021 on 13 October 2026. After that date the apps will still open, but they will get no security fixes, bug fixes or technical support, and Microsoft says there will be no extension. Businesses should find every Office 2021 installation now and plan a move.
Word, Excel and Outlook are open on almost every office computer, all day. That is why an unsupported copy of Office is a real risk and not just a licensing detail: these are the apps that open the email attachments and documents attackers like to use. If your company bought Office 2021 as a one-time purchase, this deadline applies to you, and it is only days away.
What Happened
According to Microsoft's support page titled "End of support for Office 2021", support for Office 2021 ends on 13 October 2026. Microsoft states that there will be no extension and no extended security updates. After that date, as the page explains:
- Microsoft will stop providing security fixes for newly found vulnerabilities, along with bug fixes and technical support.
- Software updates for Office 2021 will stop.
- Phone and chat support will end, and most online help content will be retired.
Microsoft also says the apps may continue to function, but warns that using them could expose users to serious security risks. You can read the notice on Microsoft's official support page.
Office Watch, a long-running Microsoft Office news site, reported in its October 2026 summary (updated 4 October 2026) that the date covers all Office 2021 products, both retail and LTSC, on Windows and Mac. That includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Publisher, Project and Visio 2021. German technology publisher heise has reported the same date.
Who Is Affected
- Companies with one-time purchase licences such as Office Home and Business 2021 or Office Professional 2021, often bought with new PCs in 2022 to 2024.
- Organisations on volume licences of Office LTSC 2021, common in government offices, factories and firms that avoid subscriptions.
- Users of standalone 2021 apps such as Project 2021 and Visio 2021.
Microsoft 365 subscribers are not affected by this deadline, because their apps are updated continuously. There is a separate point for them: Office Watch reports that from the same date, Microsoft 365 Apps running on Windows 10 will stop getting new features and will receive security updates only, until 10 October 2028.
What It Means for Indian Businesses and Departments
Nothing will stop working on 14 October. The risk builds up quietly. Every security flaw found in Office after the deadline stays open on Office 2021, and attackers often study the patches released for newer versions to find the same weakness in older ones.
There are practical effects too:
- Audits and tenders: security audits and customer questionnaires usually flag unsupported software. Check with your auditor how this will be treated.
- Cyber insurance: some policies ask whether you run supported software. Read your policy wording.
- Compatibility: over time, newer file features and add-ins may not work well with an old version.
- Budget: replacing many licences at once is a noticeable cost, so it needs planning, not a last-minute purchase.
The same day is busy for other reasons. Office Watch notes that Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions also reach end of servicing on 13 October 2026. If you are still dealing with older PCs, see our note on the Windows 10 ESU deadline.
Your Options Compared
| Option | How you pay | Suits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 subscription | Per user, monthly or yearly | Teams that want email, Teams, cloud storage and always-current apps | Ongoing cost, needs sign-in and licence management |
| Office 2024 or Office LTSC 2024 | One-time purchase per device | PCs that need only the desktop apps, or systems kept off the internet | Has its own end-of-support date, so check Microsoft's lifecycle page before buying |
| Another office suite | Varies | Users with simple document needs | Test file compatibility, macros and staff training first |
| Stay on Office 2021 | No new cost | Only as a short, planned stopgap | No security fixes, so the risk grows each month |

What to Do Now
- Find every Office 2021 installation. Use your asset management tool or check each PC under File, Account in any Office app, and record the user, device and licence type.
- Install all pending Office updates. Make sure every Office 2021 PC has the latest updates Microsoft has released, so you start from the most secure point available.
- Choose a path for each group of users. Decide who moves to Microsoft 365, who gets a newer one-time purchase version and which PCs will be retired.
- Test before you roll out. Try the new version with your macros, add-ins, templates and accounting or ERP exports on a few PCs before changing everyone.
- Reduce risk on PCs that must wait. Keep macros from the internet blocked, keep endpoint protection and email filtering up to date, and limit these PCs to the work they need.
- Set a date and a budget. Agree a completion date with management, record any accepted risk in writing and add software lifecycle dates to your IT calendar.
A routine patch management process makes deadlines like this one far easier to handle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Office 2021 stop working after 13 October 2026?
No. Microsoft says the apps may continue to function. What ends is support: security fixes, bug fixes, software updates and technical help. The risk of using it rises over time.
Can we pay Microsoft for extended security updates for Office 2021?
Microsoft's support page states there will be no extension and no extended security updates for Office 2021. The practical choices are to move to a supported version or accept the risk for a short, planned period.
Does this affect Microsoft 365 users?
Not directly. Microsoft 365 apps continue to receive updates. If you run them on Windows 10, note the reported change to security-only updates from 13 October 2026 and plan your Windows 11 move.
