The challenges
- No defined architecture. SBI's telecom department had no predefined network design.
- Funding and material shortages. Budget limits and shortages of wire and patch cords slowed progress.
- Unsafe equipment placement. An inverter and battery had been placed right next to the server rack.
- No cooling. The extended server room had no provision for air conditioning.
What we did
- Designed the network. We presented our own network architecture, and SBI adopted it.
- Kept work moving. We continued with the materials available and kept the turnkey contractor informed. Wire usage was reconciled at the end for clear, accurate billing.
- Removed a safety risk. We flagged the inverter and battery placement and, with SBI management's approval, had them moved to a separate store room.
- Secured the server room. We brought the consultant, electrical team and architects together and got approval for air conditioning and lock provisions.
- Built and tested. We interconnected switches and patch panels using approved, colour-coded custom patch cords. The installation was verified with Penta scanning, and minor connectivity issues were fixed quickly.
Result
Every phase passed and the SBI network went live. We submitted a full project report covering cable, fibre-optic and telephone connectivity, and handed over the complete documentation.
